There is something extra special about autumn in a small town. Start off your weekend in the charming Kleinburg Village at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. The permanent collection holds nearly 6,000 pieces of art by Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, their contemporaries, as well as First Nations, Métis, Inuit and other important artists. After touring the collection, go outside for a breath of fresh air and wander the network of outdoor paths and trails to find the new sculpture garden.
Return to Kleinburg for lunch at one of the many tempting eateries that line the streets. Spend a leisurely afternoon immersed in the romantic old-world charm of the village before checking into the Kingbridge Conference Centre & Institute. Nestled in the quiet hills of King Township you’ll enjoy a late afternoon walk along the trails that surround your accommodation. For dinner, savour a fine meal prepared by the Kingbridge Conference Centre & Institute’s award-winning Chef Raimund, or choose from the area’s many bistros, restaurants and pubs.
After dinner, visit the Kortright Centre for Conservation for outdoor adventure and learning. Check out the Honey Harvest, Owl Prowl or Astronomy Night before ending the day.
Start the day off with some fresh air and country surroundings at Pine Farms Orchard and enjoy a fresh-from-the-farm breakfast and coffee onsite at their Orchard Café. Next stop is at a winery or two, as you spend the day visiting York Region’s Wine and Ale Trail! York Region is home to several vine-to-bottle award winning wineries, but if your palate prefers ale, no fret, York Region has a number of craft breweries as well.
Make your way to Holland Marsh Wineries for a tasting and fabulous guided tours*. Stop in for a little history lesson at the Town of Aurora’s Hillary House National Historic Site while enroute to Gallucci Winery for lunch, served overlooking the vineyards. After lunch, consider taking a tour through the vineyards and be sure to sample some of their prized wine.
If you’re up for more, just around the corner, you will find Willow Springs Winery, located on the Oak Ridges Morraine, and not too far from there is Applewood Farm and Winery where you can sample some of their fruit wine and ales, and pick up your harvest décor while you’re at it!
End the day unwinding with a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along Historic Main Street Unionville. Stroll along Main Street and discover the many charming shops in the heritage village, and cap the evening off like a local with an ice cream or handmade treat from The Old Firehall Confectionery.
*Please drink responsibly or better yet, travel with a friendly designated driver! Reserve your spot on a tour 2 – 3 weeks in advance to avoid disappointment.
