The holidays are usually a great time to embrace winter and make the most of the cold. The cheer around often masks the chilly weather, and the spirit of the season has us all wanting to leave the house in search of fun things to do (and Instagram them). Here are the best winter activities in Central Counties!

Skating

This low-cost, classic winter activity is fun for everyone. Make it a daytime outing with the whole family and friends, or a romantic evening date with your significant other. There’s something picturesque about skating arm in arm with someone during the day or under the stars. Crisp, fresh winter air, rosy cheeks, and some hot cocoa to warm up afterwards will bring you a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for Jack Frost. Visit any of these public skating rinks: Mill Pond in Richmond Hill, Musselman Lake in Stouffville, Cedarena in Markham, and Gorman Park in Newmarket.

Art Gallery

For those who prefer warmth and an educational / cultural experience, The Varley Art Gallery in historic Unionville is the perfect place to visit during the winter months. This year, until January 10th the exhibit by Brenden Fernandes “In Position” is on. Fernandes was born in Kenya with Indian heritage, and his background has inspired him to explore the concepts of cultural identity and authenticity in the context of globalization. Through dance and choreography, Fernandes raises questions of ethnicity and migration. To enhance your experience visiting the gallery, enjoy dinner and drinks at one of Main Street Unionville’s famous restaurants.

Ski & Snowboard

For first timers and for those well-seasoned, Brimacombe in Durham county is the perfect place to have fun on the slopes. Learn from experienced instructors, and slide downhill for a fun filled day outdoors. Brimacombe’s Snow School has a bunch of professional instructors known for their skill, and people of any age are welcome to learn the ins-and-outs of skiing and snowboarding. With kids, teens, adult and parent & tot programs, the slopes here are great for the whole family. Check out their long list of features, and gear up for a day of fun in the snow!

Theatre

Dressing up and going to the theatre is an experience everyone should have, especially from a young age. Orangeville Music Theatre is sure to impress your little ones, with the Little Mermaid! Disney’s famous sea-world fantasy is brought to life, with Ariel, Prince Eric, and of course, Ursula. With all the hit songs, you and your children will have a great evening on the town! On from January 8th to 17th.
