Buckle up and hold tight! Canada’s Wonderland is debuting the fastest, tallest and longest launch roller coaster in the country this year and you’re going to want a front row seat for this ride of a life time!

Canada's Wonderland Water Park

As one of the top Ontario attractions, Canada’s Wonderland has been thrilling visitors for over 40 years. And thanks to its innovative team, the amusement park keeps frequent thrill seekers coming back again and again with new attractions, events and rides. The latest coaster on the roster is AlpenFury, which is set to wow riders visiting the park this year.

AlpenFury is a record-breaking roller coaster that takes you through Wonder Mountain, then unleashes you out and up 50 metres into the air. You’ll be hurled from sky to ground again and again through a series of inversions as the coaster traverses the park. With incredible speed and creativity, it will leave you weightless and speechless.

I had the opportunity to interview Mellisa, the Regional PR Manager for Six Flags who loves sharing the unique stories of Canada’s Wonderland, about the new AlpenFury.

Who comes up with the ideas for new rides at Canada’s Wonderland? Is it a team effort or does it start with just one big idea?

“We are driven by a goal to bring unique, world-class experiences to our guests. When we set about deciding which rides would complement the park’s other experiences, we work as a team to think through what the park needs. This includes park leadership and representation from corporate teams in maintenance, entertainment and experience and design.”

Once an idea for a ride is approved, what’s the first step in turning that idea into a real roller coaster?

“The first step is to gather proposals from ride manufacturers where they’re evaluated for the right fit – based on timelines, budget and the concept we’re hoping for.  From there, we develop the site-specific plans, considering footprint and park infrastructure. On the marketing site, we work through theming, name selection and logo design before we can announce the new project to the public.”

How long does it typically take from the first concept to the day the ride opens to the public?

“It really depends on the attraction. The bigger projects can take years of planning, so we have time to consider proposals and can build in the appropriate construction timeline.”

The New AlpenFury is themed around fire and ice—how did that idea come about?

“It all starts with a myth about Wonder Mountain and the small Alpen village at its base. Villagers there believe fire and ice combine into a mystic force that lives inside the mountain.  Guests get to witness its fury after boarding a sled train and embarking on a journey into its depths. Their launch out the summit will be accompanied by a blast of fire, as the mythic force chases them from its domain.”

Wow, a blast of fire, that’s fun! How else is this theme integrated into the ride experience?

“The theme is woven throughout the ride experience—from the immersive theming in and around the launch station, to the fast, cutting alpine sled design of the trains, to the color theme of the tracks, to the giant fireball that erupts from the summit as you shoot out of it!”

What makes AlpenFury different from other roller coasters in the park?

“There are many elements that make AlpenFury truly unique to the park. For one, it’s a launch coaster, which means it rapidly accelerates through propulsion instead of needing a traditional lift hill. It features two launches, one into the depths of Wonder Mountain and another that will propel riders straight vertical out its summit at speeds of 115 km/h. It has nine inversions—the most in the world for a launch coaster and more than any other kind of coaster at Canada’s Wonderland. Of these nine inversions, three are wholly unique to any coasters in the world as well.”

AlpenFury features the “Fire Serpent Roll.” What makes this inversion unique compared to traditional coaster elements?

“AlpenFury features three unique inversions to any coaster which makes it a feat of engineering—The Skyflyer Loop, The Ice Winder Roll, and the Fire Serpent Roll. To get technical, the Fire Serpent Roll is an ascending zero-G roll chained into a descending corkscrew, navigated at high speed in a continuous left-handed motion. Designed to wrap around itself, twisting and inverting riders so they experience weightlessness and two unparalleled train-to-track interactions in a single element.”

Sounds like it’s an out of this world experience! Has or will the AlpenFury set any records? If so, for what?

“Yes! It is the longest, tallest, and fastest launch coaster in Canada. At 1,000 metres and a max speed of 115 km/h and is 50 metres at its tallest peak. It is also record breaking for having the most inversions in the world for a launch coaster with a total of nine.“

What other records has Wonderland set with its rides and other attractions over the years?

“Leviathan, which opened in 2012, is the tallest, fastest and longest roller coaster in Canada and Yukon Striker, which opened in 2019, is currently the tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster in the world.”

Yukon Striker

Beyond the epic new roller coaster at Canada’s Wonderland, there’s plenty of other exciting things to do and see this year. In addition to the AlpenFury launching in May, the park’s 20-acre water park, Splash Works, opens May 24. Every long weekend the park will have a fireworks display. Families will love all the kid-friendly events, like KidZfest and Camp Spooky. And grown-ups will be salivating over the food festivals taking place at Canada’s Wonderland, that include favourites like the Food and Wine Festival and Oktoberfest. Plus, there’s a new foodie fest on the calendar this year–The Great BrewBQ!

For those looking for a great deal, Canada’s Wonderland launched a brand-new Silver Pass, which gets you unlimited visits through Labour Day that’s currently on sale for $89 (plus tax and fees up to $9.99). So, be sure to grab it before doors open on May 8 to take full advantage of the excitement.

So, whether you’re a thrill-seeker chasing your next adrenaline rush or just someone who loves the magic of a day at the park, AlpenFury is calling. With its epic launches, countless inversions, and record-breaking stats, it’s not just another roller coaster—it’s a full-blown adventure! So, grab your crew, clear a weekend, and make Canada’s Wonderland part of your summer adventures.
