Fall is the time of year when the world outside our door is bathed in summer’s last warmth. Mother Nature is donning her most luxurious wardrobe, resplendent in shades of vibrant ruby, molten gold and rich umber. It is as if she knows we have the long, dark winter months ahead of us, and is offering a heartwarming memory to cling to until spring comes again.
… Okay, that may be a touch overly romantic, but fall is simply a romantic season. With so much colour around us, it’s no wonder you’re craving some outdoor autumn adventure, full of stunning scenery, harvest flavours, and autumn-y activities. You want nothing more than to breathe deeply, and fill your lungs with that pure, crisp-warm autumn air, rich with the fragrance of spicy, crunchy leaves. But where to go and what to do?
Don’t worry, we at York Durham Headwaters are your go-to authority on all the things to see and do. In our humble opinion, there’s no better way to experience fall in all its glory than to hop in your vehicle and enjoy a road trip into the countryside. And there’s no destination lovelier than Georgina, near Toronto. It’s far enough away from the city to make you feel like you’ve escaped the hustle and bustle, but close enough that you can simply get on the road and go, without much pre-planning. With that in mind, we’ve got your perfect Ontario Road Trip stops in Georgina for fall of 2026, so you can get out there and make your heartwarming autumn memories.

Shop for antiques and unique gifts in the crisp fall air

There is something inexplicable about fall that makes it the season for antique shopping, isn’t there? For a hefty dose of vintage, antique and history, visit Antiques on 48 in Baldwin. This gorgeous antique shop, just south of Sutton, is two floors and 3,500 square feet of collectibles and unique finds to explore. Step back in time and dream about a simpler life from bygone eras as you wander. Items are constantly changing and the owners are friendly and knowledgeable.
Let us paint a picture: imagine wandering down a small-town high street with colourful fall leaves swirling gently around you, and you suddenly come across a cozy gift shop with linen-white clapboard siding. That is exactly what you’ll find with Village Traditions. Step through the front door to an atmosphere that feels like a warm hug, and browse all the unique gifts and items on offer. From jewellery, to clothing for the whole family, from décor to garden accessories, and even Canadiana items, spend an autumn afternoon exploring this quaint Sutton shop.
Butter Tarts and Coffee are the (un)official flavour of fall in Ontario

If you happen to plan your day trip for Saturday October 17th, then you’re in luck because it is the 7th annual Tarts 4 Hearts Butter Tart Festival. From 10am to 4pm at the Georgina Ice Palace, you can get your fill of award-winning tarts, catch the judging, and join in on the 50/50 draw, silent auction and raffle. Proceeds from the festival will go to the Peaceful Hearts Georgina Foundation.
If you can’t make the festival, then you can still get your fill of butter tarts. Take a drive to Georgina’s main street, where Moetarts bakery serves up ooey gooey butter tarts in classic flavours, as well as signature creations like Skor and coconut. Or get your butter tart fill at Elaine’s Black River Coffee, and pair it with a hot steaming brew crafted with love. This cozy location not only offers great coffee and tarts, but also relaxing seating on the dock or by the river where you can really take in the colours of an Ontario autumn.
Indulge in family fun with your favourite fall activities

Harvest season is synonymous with fall in Ontario. This season, bring the family to Homestead Orchards for time honoured harvest fun. We are in the prime of pick-your-own apple season, with different varieties coming ready for you to pick every week. The best part about picking your own apples is that you get varieties you won’t find at the generic supermarket. Head out into the pumpkin patch where the young ones (or the young at heart) can pick their own jacks for Halloween. Homestead Orchards also offers fresh-picked strawberries, raspberries, sweet corn, squash and asparagus in store, along with delectable baked goods made fresh onsite, from-scratch, and with as many ingredients grown on-farm as possible. Fall has never been so wholesome.
As we get closer to the season of ghosts, ghouls and goblins, be sure to check out Halloween events happening at the Georgina Village Museum. For fifty years, this museum has been a place where the past comes alive, stories are preserved and Georgina’s rich heritage is celebrated.

- Family Fright – Join the museum on Saturday, October 17, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for a bewitching experience the whole family will love. Dress in your best costume and enjoy spine-chilling stories, spook-tacular activities, live performances, games and devilishly delicious treats.
- Museum After Hours Tour – Have you ever wanted to visit the museum after hours? On September 25th, join the museum for a guided evening tour of some of the village’s historic buildings. Learn about some of the darker tales from Georgina’s history and how the buildings and objects within are tied to those tales.
- Halloween crafts for all ages – The popular spooktacular programs are back! Make Halloween-themed apothecary bottles that would fit right in to any dusty ol’ pantry with the museum’s Spooky Apothecary Décor workshop, and learn how ‘potions’ intertwine folk remedies and folklore as you brew your very own creations. Paint overtop thrifted paintings to transform a boring old picture into a spooktacular creation with a Spooky Thrifted Paint Night. This event is perfect for those who love to get creative and showcase their terrifying skills. Specifically for the wee monsters… er, we mean kids… children will get to decorate portraits of witches, ghosts, and ghouls during the Halloween Children’s Craft workshop.
- Are you an art enthusiast looking for a unique and inspiring experience? Look no further than The Georgina Studio Tour September 26 & 27, 2026 10am – 5pm. This self-guided tour takes you through the scenic lakeside community of Georgina, where you’ll discover an incredible array of local artists and their stunning works. From painting and sculpture to pottery and fibre arts, there’s something for every taste and style.

Turn your autumn exploring adventure into a romantic fall getaway with these overnight stay options.
If your Ontario fall road trip in Georgina included a visit to Sibbald Point Provincial Park, don’t forget that camping is available until Thanksgiving. Everyone thinks summer when they think camping, but have you ever been tucked up in front of a campfire with s’mores and a blanket in the crisp fall air? There’s nothing like it! Plus, that lovely fragrance of campfire smoke smells so much better when it mingles with the scent of spicy, crunchy leaves.

For an overnight stay that is the pinnacle of elegance, consider the Briars Resort and Spa. Have a fine dining meal at the restaurant where you can sample Ontario farm-to-fork flavours. Before you turn in for the night in your charming Victorian-inspired room, enjoy some outdoor recreational activities on the shores of Lake Simcoe, which are brimming with fall colour this time of year.
