Our blog is chock full of great ideas for fun things to see and do in York Durham and Headwaters. We are always adding new content and updating old posts, but sometimes you might stumble upon something from our vault. Not everyone is blessed with the good baking genes. My mom’s got it, and my grandma’s got it… And I am definitely still working on perfecting it. In the meantime, I like to classify myself more as a “taste-tester” and really get to know the in’s and out’s of the bakeries in my area. When it comes to baking for family over the holidays, I really don’t want to disappoint. So I would rather buy something I know is going to be delicious and well-received than deal with the sad faces of my brothers-in-law who were wishing their snowmen cookies tasted as good as they looked.
Here to save the day are people who have literally made it their job to bake delicious food for us “taste-testers.” Since everyone’s preferences are different, I’ve made a list of bakeries who provide multiple options for sweet treats this holiday:
Wicked Shortbread — Orangeville, ON
Located in Orangeville but available for online purchase, Wicked Shortbread offers… wicked shortbread! With flavours such as butter pecan, chocolate chunk, cranberry craze, maple sugar, toffee bitz and more, they are sure to have something for everyone! Plus, if you take them out of the box and lay them carefully on a plate, you could probably pass them off as homemade…
Annina’s Bakeshop — Goodwood, ON
This popular spot offers full-menu catering, including some absolutely delectable desserts. They will provide catering for any number of people, small or large (10-500!) using the freshest ingredients. Dessert options include Apple Walnut Phyllo Strudel, Cheesecake Brûlée, Nutty Carrot Cake, and (what I’m personally eyeing up) “Kick it Up” Tiramisu which uses Bailey’s and Kahlua. Check them out online for a full catering menu!
Tripl3 Baked — Markham, ON
Looking to satisfy that cupcake hankering? Stop your search at Tripl3 Baked – an adorable spot in Markham started by three best friends in 2014. Grab half a dozen delicious cupcakes for $16 or a full dozen for $32, and surprise your family with a delicious homemade treat (hey, I didn’t say it was homemade by you… it’s not really a lie!).
Hurst Bakery — Aurora, ON
Specializing in stunning cake creations, Hurst Bakery has served York Region for over 30 years. All delicious baked goods are made from scratch using the freshest ingredients. Outside of cakes, Hurst also offers a wide spread of delicious baked goods like muffins, danishes, scones, pies, cookies, and freshly baked bread.
Gabe’s Country Bake Shoppe — Caledon, ON
The sweet family owned Italian bakery is well known for their cannoli. Being an Italian bakery, I would hope this would be their main attraction! They fuse traditional Italian desserts (like the cannoli) with the best recipes of today – think chewy chocolate chip cookies, double fudge brownies, walnut butter tarts, and cheese cakes.
Writing this list just made me very hungry, and now I’m frantically searching my house for any sign of baked goods… Send help!
