Rural Routes and Dirty Boots

Spring is in the air, and after a long chilly winter, people are eager to get outside and explore all the great things to do in YDH. During this difficult time, it's important you and your family stay close to home while taking the opportunity to explore all the wonderful things to do in your own backyard. Don't know what's in your own backyard? Visit to re-discover some pretty cool activities all over the province while supporting your local businesses and communities. If you are lucky enough to live in YDH (we are biased), we've got some great ideas for you to get active outside, explore your inner artist, learn something new and celebrate this awesome season...virtually or in-person.

Remember safety is a choice you make and we look forward to seeing all visitors again soon.

Please check with all businesses for updated hours of operation, programming, COVID-19 policies, and restrictions.

Durham is developing a reputation for harvesting award winning, craft beer producers!  These locations are open for you to fully experience their fresh artisanal summer brews. Sample on the spot, take a seat at the picnic table, or back the cooler for later in your home ‘beer garden.

First up: Falcon Brewery to hear the story of the ‘Bomb Girls’ [Blond Ale] brewed in war-historic, Ajax. The town was named after the named in honour of one of the three ships that, in 1939, defeated enemy battleships.
Detour: Veteran’s Memorial Park, overlooking the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Follow the shoreline road to ‘Town Brewery’, Whitby. It’s time to visit the ‘Salad Bar’, a Suplex-Sour W/ Blackberry & Black Tea!

Detour: Around the block is one of Lake Ontario’s busiest marinas! Visit the clubhouse and inquire about returning another day for a fishing charter!

Next up: It’s ‘All Or Nothing Brewhouse’ to sample a Raspberry & Blackberry Screamsicle Ale. The incredible colour from the berry medley is the summer in a glass!
Detour: Take in the view of the mid-mod brewery from their sunny patio; it’s an authentic‘1950’s Brewer’s Retail’ location!

All or Nothing

Next up: Toast the brewer of Manantler Brewing Company on their new location (and moving in 2020!). That calls for a ‘Root Of All Evil’ [Root Beer Porter]!
Detour: 10 steps next door for some of ‘Stuttering John’s Smokehouse’ protein. Fuel up!

After a meal, head north to one of Ontario’s favourite small towns, Port Perry. The Old Flame Brewing Company had it’s historic beginning, housed in a former c.1884 carriage work. We suggest their summer fruit lagers; but you’ll have a hard time choosing between blueberry, watermelon, mango and llime. Think it over in the courtyard during a game of cornhole toss.
Detour: Foot tour around this boutique town, dip your toes in Lake Scugog or find ‘Ontario’s Finest Butcher’ (just ask any local!)

Second Wedge Patio

Last stop, The Second Wedge Brewing Co  in the Trail Capital of Canada. Their ‘beer garden’ is a favourite for hikers and cyclists. It’s seems fitting to enjoy the ‘High Grass’ [Lemongrass ginger saison].

Detour: Better check out the vintage train station next door and find out why they call the roof a ‘witch’s hat’.
