If summer were a destination, it would be a picnic at Buttercup Hollow (Orono Park). Nestled among the mature cedar trees and winding creek, this pretty hollow has been a shady place to refresh, play ball and share summer treats for over 90 years. Fill your picnic basket with gatherings from the local bistros, café’s and bakery. We highly recommend a sticky apple fritter or homemade doughnut from The Village Bake Shop
We perused the Orono Antique Market for that fun vintage find and popped into Terrans Wellness Centre for an aromatic lift. From there we picked up the self-guided, Heritage Walking Tour. 19 destinations allowed us to see where the local merchant, carpenter, cheese maker, grocer, blacksmith, and doctor all lived a century ago. The hand-scooped ice-cream at The Fire Hall Bistro was the cherry on top!
If nature trails are more your beat, the Orono Crown Lands offers a deep-rooted story of this mature evergreen and deciduous hardwood forest. The 633 acres of the former Ontario Tree Nursery now is home to 13 km of well-marked trails. In late August keep an eye out for the Pacific salmon running upstream to spawn.
