So, let’s meet Emily, a passionate local who is eager to share her holiday tips and tricks for planning a storybook Christmas trip to Caledon.

Hi Emily! If someone was visiting Caledon for the holidays, where would you take them first?

“Definitely the Alton Mill Arts Centre. Cozy, inspiring, full of interesting heritage stories and beautifully decorated for the holidays – it’s also a great spot to look for the perfect gift for the creative on your list. Headwaters Arts has their annual Artful Giving Show and Sale that starts November 12th and has lots of beautiful pieces (big and small). Check on the Alton Mill’s website to see if you can catch a hands-on workshop with one of the resident artists, or spend some time exploring the site’s history in the Heritage Exhibit room.”

Caledon is known for its beautiful scenery — what’s the most magical spot to see it covered in snow?

“Few things beat the feeling of sitting in a cedar sauna or hot tub with big, fat snowflakes falling all around you. The beautiful Liberty Inn in Cataract is more than perfectly appointed guest rooms – the onsite private Nordic Spa area is where you can really relish in the tranquility of the country air. If scenic park views are more what you’re looking for, winter is a beautiful time of year in Forks of the Credit Provincial Park – picturesque Niagara Escarpment terrain, majestic forests and the churning river make for a great hike location.”

Do you have a favourite local café or bakery that feels extra cozy this time of year?

“That’s so tough to pick! Probably Coywolf Coffee in Inglewood or Gather Café in Alton – Coywolf has lots of comfy seating in cozy nooks and the beautiful creaky floors of the heritage building make the space feel like a winter escape. Gather has a fireplace and winter jazz playing often – a great place to catch up with a friend for a few hours. Both do fun seasonal drink menus and for bonus points, they both have a small retail area for gifts (think locally made preserves, coffee beans, apparel and more).”

If Caledon had a signature holiday drink, what would it be — and where would we find it?

“Caledon is home to some amazing craft beverage producers, but a must-visit is Spirit Tree Cidery for a sample flight of their hard ciders (there’s a non-alcoholic option, too). Taste the bounty of the fall apple harvest and try Spirit Tree’s most popular ciders – Dry Hopped, Apple Lager, Pear Cider and classic Draught. Their specialty Reserve cider bottles make great host gifts to have on hand as well.”

What’s one winter activity that every visitor has to try while they’re here?

“Outdoor winter activities are a way of life out here – whether you’re donning cross-country skis or snowshoes, hitting the trails in Caledon is a must-do. Parks in winter are so peaceful and fresh – it’s a beautiful way to rediscover somewhere you know, but in a different season. You can rent equipment at Albion Hills Conservation Area or Terra Cotta Conservation Area, or bring your own and check out a number of great trails in the area. Nothing beats the feeling of a great workout, followed by a pint or latte at a cozy spot nearby of course.”

The holidays are all about treats — who in town makes the best hot chocolate, baked good, or comfort food dish?

“Hands-down Blissfully Baked x Little Almond in downtown Bolton. This talented duo make the most delicious squares, cookies and bars (Ruffles Square – a Rice Krispie Square x Potato Chip hybrid – trust me on this one), but their seasonal treat box is a must-get around the holidays. Flavoured macarons, gingerbread men and other new treats make up this great mix. Plus, you know those viral toasted marshmallow-topped hot chocolates? Best of luck choosing from four types on their holiday café menu.”

Do you have a go-to local shop for finding unique, locally made gifts?

“I love shopping at the Lost Bear Market in Inglewood – whether you’re looking for something for a pet, your spouse, your nephew or mom, they’ve got some really cute and interesting finds. Their homemade frozen prepared foods are fantastic, and their small but well-stocked fridge is the perfect spot to stop for some emergency eggnog.”

Are there any local traditions or events that make Caledon feel especially festive?

“Caledon is a town of small hamlets and villages, and most of them host quaint and welcoming annual tree-lighting events for the holidays! There’s Jinglewood in Inglewood on November 30th, the Town of Caledon tree lighting on December 2nd, Light up the Night in Cheltenham on December 4th, Christmas in the Valley in Bolton on December 5th and the Santa Claus Parade with the Bolton Kin on December 6th.”

What’s a hidden gem or under-the-radar place in Caledon that really shines during the holidays?

“It’s a year-round hidden gem in my opinion, but De Boers Market in Palgrave is a favourite spot of mine to stock up on locally-raised meats, vegetables and pantry items in preparation for holiday hosting. Whether you’re pre-ordering your Christmas Turkey or farm-raised Roast, or picking up eggs and bacon for Boxing Day breakfast, supporting this family-run farm just gets me in the festive spirit.”

If you could plan the ultimate “holiday day trip” through Caledon, what would be on the itinerary?

“I’d start the day with a cup of fresh-roasted coffee at Cordoba Coffee near Inglewood, head over to Glen Echo Nurseries to pick up some holiday planters and garland (and pick up some stocking stuffers from their holiday gift shop), and stop in for a great, comforting lunch at Heatherlea Farm Shoppe (and probably some more shopping, if we’re being honest). Then I’d head to the Upper Credit Conservation Area for some time in the trees before heading over to GoodLot Farm & Farmstead Brewing for a fireside pint or two! You could also make a day trip of all of the suggested spots mentioned above! There’s so much to see – you wouldn’t be mad about turning it into a weekend holiday trip.”
