Our blog is chock full of great ideas for fun things to see and do in York Durham and Headwaters. We are always adding new content and updating old posts, but sometimes you might stumble upon something from our vault. If this article has inspired you to hit the road, be sure to double-check that the featured stops in this post are still welcoming visitors.
Oh, the weather outside’s delightful… Yes, we know that’s not how the song goes, but here in York Durham Headwaters, we love winter. Especially when the snow starts falling in December, because that means there’s a good chance it’s going to be a white Christmas! When the holidays hit, we at YDH are all about the cozy, wholesome feels—and there’s nothing cozier and more wholesome than a Christmas event that makes you feel like you’re in your very own storybook.
That’s why the Pickering Museum Village is once again hosting its popular annual A Storybook Christmas! This heartwarming holiday adventure is truly for kids of all ages, from one to ninety-two. So bundle up and prepare to immerse yourself in the festive spirit with a nineteenth-century twist.
A Storybook Christmas

Meet Teddy, Pickering Museum Village’s beloved mascot. Teddy wants you to come along and step inside a magical storybook setting. Have a wander through the village at Christmastime. Waiting for you and the rosy-cheeked children are interactive activities, delicious holiday treats, a craft station to get your creative juices flowing, fun trivia and games, lively music, and so much more. Of course, no trip to A Storybook Christmas is complete without a visit from the big man in red. Get your photo taken with Santa Claus himself to capture the memories you’ve made.
“We love that these timeless events are so popular here in York Durham Headwaters,” says Jessica Elliott, Marketing Manager for YDH. “It’s the kind of thing you visit and walk away from feeling like a kid again. How often do we get to step back in time and experience something so magical?” In today’s hectic world where everything feels like it’s moving at lightning speed, it’s nice to be able to slow down and experience a simpler time—especially during the holiday season.
A Storybook Christmas is happening December 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This non-guided, free-flow event takes about an hour, so ensure that you arrive prior to 2 p.m. to participate fully in the whole experience. And rain or shine, A Storybook Christmas will be happening, so dress warmly, because much of the adventure takes place outside, or in historic buildings that are not heated. Tickets are $11.30 for adults, $6.78 for children over four years old, $7.91 for seniors, or you can purchase a family pass for $35.60 which allows for two adults and up to three children in the same household.

A Storybook Christmas is the perfect way to kick off your holiday season if you haven’t done so already, or to keep the festive vibes high if you have. It’s a time to bond with friends and family, to invite wonder back into your life at this time of the year, and to reconnect with the child in you that never truly lost the magic of Christmas. Teddy and the Pickering Museum Village are eager to welcome you, so book your tickets today for this fabulous holiday event!
