Every holiday season, we cozy up on the couch with cocoa in hand and revisit the Christmas classics — those timeless tales that fill our hearts with nostalgia, laughter, and a touch of magic. But what if you could step into those stories yourself?
Here in York Durham Headwaters, that feeling isn’t far-fetched. Between our twinkling main streets, countryside inns, and snow-dusted trails, it’s easy to imagine your favourite festive films coming to life right outside your door.

So grab your mittens, cue the soundtrack, and imagine how these beloved Christmas stories would unfold… right here in YDH.
It’s a Wonderful Life
Snowflakes swirl softly through the air as you stroll down the main street of a charming small town, the glow of shop windows lighting the path ahead. Laughter echoes from a local café, and there’s that unmistakable warmth — not just from the cocoa, but from the people who make every place feel like home.
In YDH, you can find your own Bedford Falls. Visit a historic downtown where bells ring from old churches and friendly shopkeepers greet you by name.
Pick out a vintage ornament from a local boutique and hang a bell on your Christmas tree — because, as the movie reminds us, “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.”

White Christmas

Channel your inner Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney as you wrap up in a cozy sweater and settle in for a night of festive dining and live music. Maybe there’s a little snowfall outside, maybe not — but with twinkling lights reflecting in your glass and laughter echoing from the next table, it’s a white Christmas in spirit if not in snow.
Spend your morning exploring the local village, sipping lattes, or visiting nearby shops filled with handcrafted treasures. Because even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, the magic of the season always finds a way to shine. Who knows maybe you can even put on a holiday performance to save the resort!

The 2025 CPKC Holiday Train will tour Canada and the U.S. Nov. 19 through Dec. 21, raising money, food and awareness to support food banks across our network. Watch the beautifully decorated train roll into town and watch professional musicians play free concerts from the brightly decorated train’s stage. CPKC donates to the local food bank at each stop and encourages all attendees to make a monetary or heart-healthy food donation. Since its inaugural journey in 1999, the CPKC Holiday Train has raised more than $26 million and collected approximately 5.4 million pounds of food for community food banks in Canada and the U.S.

Want to take ride this holiday season? It may not be a train but Elliott Tree Farm in Erin, ON has added a brand-new experience to their already amazing and popular holiday Christmas Tree Experience. This year with the purchase of a Christmas tree you can take a ride on an old zoo mobile to Santa’s cottage! Take your photo and tell him your Christmas wish. Then go back to the canteen for amazing snacks and warm drinks! This is the ultimate holiday adventure in Headwaters.
For another fun ride option follow along with Town Trolly. This converted trolly will be making apparencies throughout Durham Region this holiday season. On November 29th join Town Trolly for the Santa Pub Crawl. For $69.95 get dressed in your best and brightest Christmas gear and hop along to 5 different bars and restaurants in Port Perry. Then on December 5th and 6th visit Town Trolly at The Uxbridge Holiday Trail one of the regions biggest events of the season!
So, bundle up in your warmest hat and scarf and listen to the sound of bells jingling and the trains whistle. Maybe there’s a cup of hot chocolate in your hands, or maybe it’s the wide-eyed wonder of little ones beside you that keeps you warm.
Maybe after you can even treat yourself to “The first gift of Christmas!”
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Every great storybook needs its very own Whoville, and lucky for us, YDH is sprinkled with towns so merry and bright they could make even the Grinch crack a smile. Start your festive adventure at a tree lighting, where entire communities gather as the first twinkle of the season sparks to life. At Santa’s Spectacle of Lights in Ajax, Port Perry’s tree lighting and candlelit walk, Caledon’s Tree Lighting, or Orangeville’s glowing Christmas in the Park, the air feels sweeter, the crowd seems cheerier, and—if you’re paying close attention—you might just feel your heart grow three sizes, too.
Once you’re buzzing with holiday joy, wander into local shops and markets to craft your own Who-feast. Scoop up artisan cheeses that would make the Whos cheer, festive baked treats piping warm from the oven, and a perfect roast from a local butcher—everything you need for a meal so joyful and generous that even the Grinch would shuffle over, pull up a chair, and ask for seconds.
Because here in YDH, Christmas doesn’t come from a store. It comes from the glow of shared moments, the kindness of neighbours, and the magic that lingers in every lantern-lit lane.
Elf
If Buddy the Elf were road-tripping through YDH this holiday season, you know he’d be bursting through café doors announcing, “You did it! World’s best cup of coffee!” Luckily for him—and for you—our region has some truly magical stops where a warm mug feels like a hug straight out of the North Pole. Start your quest at Roost Café in King, a cozy nook that smells like cinnamon dreams. Then follow the candy-cane trail to Tin Roof Café in Erin, where the lattes are as comforting as a Christmas movie you’ve seen a hundred times. Finally, wrap your mittened hands around something delicious at Bean and Basket in Ajax, a charming little spot that’s basically a holiday hug in café form. And because no Elf adventure is complete without meeting a mall Santa who “smells like beef and cheese,” you can continue Buddy’s journey by scouting out the jolliest (and hopefully freshest) Clauses at Upper Canada Mall, Vaughan Mills, Oshawa Town Centre, and Pickering Town Centre. Just remember—don’t pull on their beards. We don’t need a repeat of that scene.

This holiday season, let your favourite Christmas stories leap off the screen and come to life all around you. Whether you’re skating under the stars, sipping cocoa by the fire, or singing along with carolers in a storybook town, York Durham Headwaters is where holiday memories are made.
