Spring has sprung! And what better way to enjoy the freshness of spring than straight from the farm.
Did you know that York Region is home to over 700 farms, with some of these being accessible to the public throughout the year? Now, if only there was a handy dandy list to pinpoint the exact locations of the farms you could visit. Guess what? There is! York Farm Fresh (YFF) produces an annual York Farm Fresh Guide Map which highlights over 30 farms, open to the public, along with Farmers’ Markets throughout the region as well.
And to make it even easier to navigate your way around York Region, last year YFF created 5 self-drive routes clustering properties in proximity to one other together, with estimated travel times included. Each route offers a mix of produce, protein, and farm fresh prepared foods. Approximate driving times are also listed to help you better plan your day! All you have to do is pick a route, and head on out. Downloadable versions of the routes are also available. Be sure to check times and Covid-19 protocols, as some properties may prefer you order ahead.
Now, York Region is also home to a few wineries and craft breweries, so adding a detour on a route or two may be in order. Market Brewing Company, in Newmarket, for example, is just a short 5-minute drive away from Sharon Creek Farm in Passport Route A. Stop on in and check out their selection. Marketing Brewing has launched their Market Bottle Shop, so not only can you pick up their beers, but you can also find a selection of brews from across Ontario. And Holland Marsh Wineries can be slotted in nicely either before or after Round the Bend Farm into Passport Route B. Tours and Tastings are available year-round here Wednesdays through Sundays. Just reserve a time and adjust your route accordingly.
Whatever route you choose, farm fresh goodness is just a short drive away.
