Coffee by the Tree

Once upon a time, in a magical realm known as YDH, there lived a gentle elf named Jasper. Jasper was a bit different from the other elves, always feeling a bit out of place but he had sparkle and he had glitter and the most remarkable talent of all: he could find the most splendid Christmas trees.

Every year, Jasper embarked on a quest to discover the most enchanting tree in all of YDH. He wandered through the tree farms, admiring each tree he encountered. Yet, this season, none seemed to quite capture the magic he sought. Just when he was on the verge of giving up, a gentle whisper beckoned to him.

“Here, this way,” the soft voice called. “I am the tree you’re seeking.”

Jasper followed the gentle voice and found himself standing before a magnificent white spruce. Its Strong slender twigs were lush with green, and its shape was perfect in every way. Was this the tree he was searching for?

As he stood back to admire his discovery, he realized he needed to explore more types of trees before he made his final decision. So, he consulted his trusted source, the North Pole’s Guide to Selecting the Perfect Tree in YDH. It was wonderful book written by Santa’s head Arborist many moons ago. Jasper could barely contain his excitement as he opened the ancient book, and flipped to Chapter 6. In Old Norse it began with:

I YDH ríki, þar sem tré blíðka,

Þessi bók afhjúpar hvers og eins sinni.

Ek skal útskýra þeirra eðli, og leiða þitt leitandi,

Fyrir það tré sem hentar þér best.

In YDH’s realm, where trees enchant,

This book unveils each one’s slant.

I’ll detail their essence, and guide your quest,

For the tree that suits you best.

Jasper studied the guide, learning about the various types of trees available. There was the White Spruce, perfect for holding ornaments and emitting a delightful scent when its needles were crushed. The sturdy Scotch Pine retained its needles well throughout the season. Then there was the Balsam Fir, known for its excellent needle retention and suitability for a longer display. The White Pine had soft and elongated needles, though it posed a challenge for decorations. The Colorado Blue Spruce sported striking bluish-gray needles with sharp points. Lastly, the Fraser Fir, with its dark green color and pleasant fragrance, demanded a higher price due to its longer growth period.

After careful consideration, Jasper settled on the Balsam Fir. Its rounded shape and deep green color were perfect for his delicate ornaments and weaved a magical spell. He knew this tree would bring immense joy to all who beheld it. It was perfect! He quickly called for help from the friendly tree farm staff to help him with his tree….after all he was a tiny elf and it was a very big tree!

So, for those seeking the perfect tree this holiday season, remember Jasper’s journey. Seek a tree that speaks to your heart, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance and help. Above all, cherish the true magic of the season—the love and joy we share with those around us.

Old Norse: I YDH ríki, þar sem tré blíðka, Þessi bók afhjúpar hvers og eins sinni. Ek skal útskýra þeirra eðli, og leiða þitt leitandi, Fyrir það tré sem hentar þér best.

White Spruce: Slender twigs, dense foliage, and symmetrical shape. Strong branches that securely hold ornaments. Requires ample water to retain its attractive dark green, stiff, slightly curved needles. Releases a sharp, pungent scent when needles are crushed

Scotch Pine: Hardy and robust tree with needles appearing in clusters of two. Ranges from blue-green to yellow-green. Holds needles well over the holiday season

Balsam Fir: Short, rounded at the tip, dark shiny green, and flat (won’t roll between fingers). Excellent needle retention, suitable for longer display periods. Ideal for lighter ornaments due to branch strength

White Pine: Soft, flexible, and elongated, appearing in bunches of five. Considered one of the most visually pleasing trees but challenging to decorate

Colorado Blue Spruce: Emit a resinous odor when crushed, adding to their distinctive nature. Attractive bluish-gray to silvery blue needles with sharp points. Often used as both Christmas trees and ornamental plants

Fraser Fir: Dark green, flattened with silvery-white undersides, and a pleasant scent. More expensive due to a longer growing period
