The True Meaning of Christmas – Reconnect with Your Loved Ones

Posted : November 22, 2022

Our blog is chock full of great ideas for fun things to see and do in York Durham and Headwaters. We are always adding new content and updating old posts, but sometimes you might stumble upon something from our vault. If this article has inspired you to hit the road, be sure to double-check that the featured stops in this post are still welcoming visitors.

How many times do we hear it: the true meaning of Christmas has been lost? Here in York Durham Headwaters, we don’t quite agree with that statement. We’re brimming with holiday cheer, and all of the warmth and heart that goes along with the season. That being said, we do admit that there is something to the idea that Christmas has become too frenetic. We live in a hyper-connected world, where relationships are carried out online and even when we are together, our noses are buried in our mobile devices.

Add to this the recent COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve come through a time where, in order to keep each other safe and healthy, we’ve needed to stay away from our family, friends and loved ones. We’ve turned to online shopping out of necessity, and many of us have moved to a work-from-home model where we don’t have the opportunity to greet colleagues and friendly faces each day. It has been a tumultuous time to say the least, and we think that now is the time to find our way back to what is really important this Christmas—spending time with the people we love.

Family at the Holidays

We’d like to help you get back to the true meaning of the holidays, and have come up with some ideas on how to help you feel connected this season.

A YDH Holiday Road Trip

York Durham Headwaters has always been your Ultimate Road Trip Destination. We pride ourselves on all the things there are to see and do in our region. Whether it’s big-city excitement and entertainment or small-town hospitality you’re after, you’ll find it all around YDH. Road trips are an excellent way to spend quality time with your friends and family. Singing to your favourite tunes on the radio, playing car games, or simply having a wonderful conversation can bring us closer when we are snug in our vehicles travelling from one destination to another. You may be following one of our Road Trip itineraries, or making your way to a single destination for fun and entertainment. Whatever it is you choose to do, a YDH Road Trip is all about quality time.

If you haven’t yet decided what you want your Ultimate Holiday Road Trip to be, we’d like to suggest one of our Hallmark Historic Downtowns. We call them that because visiting our charming small-town Main Streets at this festive time of the year is like stepping through your television and onto the set of a Hallmark movie. Unique shops, delightful dining, and decorations and lights galore await in our Historic Downtowns. We are so sure you will love these little gems that we even wrote a feature post about them: Have a Hallmark Holiday Season in these Charming Historic Downtowns

Get Connected, Get Cooking

When you go out for a delicious meal at one of our restaurants here in York Durham Headwaters, you can spend that time reconnecting with your loved ones. But what about the time it took to cook the meal? That’s prime quality time, too. This season, we’ve curated a selection of wonderful recipes from all over our region, and have compiled them into our holiday recipe book for you to choose and try at your leisure. Our makers and artisans who have contributed this year swear by these recipes—many have been in families for generations. So, carry on the tradition, and make a new one for yourself. A night spent cooking together makes the meal that much tastier.

You don’t have to tell us that this idea sounds great. We know… we have loved ones that we want to spend more time with, too. But, believe it or not, we think we can do even better than just cooking together: have you considered taking a cooking class with your loved one? Turn cooking into a night out with The Chef Upstairs in Vaughan. For over a decade, this innovative experience has been helping participants of all ages improve their cooking skills while spending time with friends and family in an interactive environment. Featuring fresh, local ingredients, The Chef Upstairs is a memorable experience that you and your loved ones will thoroughly enjoy. The best part? You get to eat your delectable meal afterwards.
